If you’re anything like me, you’ve got tons of supplies and even more photos, but less time to use them than you’d like. For the first two years of my scrapbooking life I watched as others created tons of pages that looked great while mine came out so-so. I took a few classes at a local store and went to a few conventions and even though I was getting pages made, it took me a long time to decide on how to layout my pages and what embellishments to use everytime I sat down. I was actually thinking of just tossing everything even though I loved what others were doing.


And then one day, I stumbled, well, actually, I think it was divine intervention because I was really frustrated and needed something to inspire me, but I discovered something that made me scratch my head and grin the biggest grin I may have ever grinned. More like radiated! It was an Oprah "Aha Moment."

I was talking to a friend of mine and she had just started scrapbooking. Her pages looked amazing, and she was able to make a lot of them in no time at all. I told her how frustrated I had become with my own creations and how it took me forever to make decisions on layout and materials, and she said one word to me. Actually, it was two, "Sketches, darling."

I looked at her and thought she said Sketchers, you know, like the footwear. I looked down at my sneakers then back at her. The puzzled look on my face caused her to laugh. She said, "You don’t need Sketchers, you need to start using sketches for your scrapbooking layouts."

And then she showed me. It was a Eureka moment – and I’m not talking vacuum. My eyes went so wide that she started to laugh.

Well, that afternoon, I used some of her sketches and I made 14 pages!!! That was more than I had made in the last two months. And each one was nicer than the one before. My eyes were not the only thing open now, my heart was too.

I was seeing my children on the pages and I was proud to show them in such a wonderful and elegant way. And it all came down to discovering, actually, unlocking, the missing ingredient, my new muse ==> scrapbook sketches – the kind without the laces!!!

That was a few years ago. The impact that one day had on me has been amazing. For one, I feel like a more organized woman now. I see my photos in an altogether different way. And they’re organized too. My scrapbook supplies are finally getting used as well! My husband has even noticed!

I used to think that buying more was the answer to my inspiration, but through using sketches, I realized that I had been inspired to buy enough supplies and that I should start using them.

Everything has come to life. Most importantly, my memories and all the good times we’ve had with family and friends has come to life. I love scrapbooking again..

And every time I sit down and look back on that one day when I thought my friend said I needed a new pair of sneakers, I laaaaaugh. "Sketches, darling." The other thing my husband and kids have noticed is that I’m happier and have more time. I’m grateful for all of this.

My friends at the local scrapbook store have noticed too. I have a couple of layouts on display in the store and I’m teaching a class there now too. I’ve also had a few layouts published in major magazines. (If you’ve ever tried getting published, you’ll appreciate the accomplishment.)

After all this, I find I’m happy helping others learn how to scrapbook and to help even accomplished scrapbookers find renewed inspiration to take their scrapbooking to a new level.
