Author of "Transcription Work From Home! How To Make A Full-Time Income From Home As A Transcriptionist"
Working from home is a desire many people have. Imagine commuting to your office in less than one minute. You can stay in your pyjamas for the morning too. No more rushing around in the morning trying to find the right pair of shoes to wear with your outfit. In fact, shoes will now become optional!
Then there’s the lifestyle that working from home gives you. The freedom to schedule your work around your life, not the other way round.
How many times have you had to miss out on activities for your children because you couldn’t get the time off? How many times have you gone to work sick because you didn’t have any more sick leave you could use or because you didn’t want to upset the boss?
Have you ever felt that there must be more to life than the daily grind? Sure, you’re working to make money, but when do you ever get to enjoy it?
If you’ve had to work holidays or weekends before now, this is your chance to work when you want to, not when you have to.
In 2001, I was a bored, frustrated, disillusioned 9-to-5 secretary wondering how I could get off the work-a-day treadmill. There didn’t seem to be any time to enjoy life. I spent 2 hours of my day commuting to work and 8 hours in the office every day.
When I got home in the evening I was too tired to do anything but lie on the couch and watch mindless TV.
When my precious weekends came along, I spent Saturday catching up on household chores and food shopping.
Sunday should have been a day for resting, catching up with friends, and just allowing myself to ‘be’. However I usually found myself thinking about Monday and the working week ahead, no matter what I happened to be doing on Sunday!
My boss was nice enough but I didn’t like being told what to do and when to do it. I also didn’t like having just 2 weeks holiday a year.
It’s not as if I didn’t like work itself. I just wanted more freedom in my life, more control over when to take holidays, when to take days off, when to actually do my work.
However, like most of us, I had a mortgage and bills to pay. I couldn’t just quit my job and opt out of the rat race. I also knew that getting a new job wouldn’t solve the problem. It would just be the same thing, in a different place!
Another thing that bothered me was my job security. I was under no illusion that my job was safe. I could have been made redundant at any time with no other income to fall back on. It’s no wonder that the word ‘JOB’ stands for ‘Just Over Broke’.
One day I happened to pick up a newspaper and spotted an article about people working from home providing secretarial services online. I immediately realised that this was the solution I had been hoping for. I set about learning everything I could about this business in my spare time.
To cut a long story short, after much trial and error I figured out how to set myself up to work at home. I started out by offering transcription services (for those of you who are not familiar with transcription, it’s simply typing words from an audio file into a document).
I kept my full-time office job while I got my first few clients. After a while I went part-time, working outside the home 3 days a week. When I had enough transcription work online, I was able to quit my office job and work from home full-time.
Today, I provide lots of different services from home as a Virtual Assistant and earn a full-time income working part-time hours.
However, there’s absolutely no need to provide lots of different services in order to earn a full-time income from home. I just like to have a lot of variety in my daily life. It’s more than possible to specialise in one service such as transcription or typing and still earn a full-time income. Alternatively, you may just want to earn a supplementary income working just a few hours a week, to bring extra money into the household. It’s totally up to you.
As a transcription business owner, your income is not dependent on one single employer, unlike a ‘normal’ job. With a traditional job, one month you could be earning an income but if your employer decides they don’t need you any more, you have no income at all.
With a transcription business, you have multiple clients, so if one of them no longer needs your services, you simply replace them with another client.
If you’re wondering how much I charge for my services, my hourly rate is between $35 – $45 per hour. The costs of running this type of business are very low, which means I earn a very good income.
So what happens in times of a recession? Is it still a good idea to become a work at home transcriptionist? The fact is, in spite of a recession, there are countless businesses that are still continuing to operate. Not only are they still operating, some are very successful indeed.
The media hardly ever mentions the numerous businesses that are growing and becoming even more successful during the recession. That’s because negative headlines are more newsworthy than positive ones.
There will always be a need for transcriptionists. It’s also more cost effective for companies to outsource this type of work rather than have it done in-house.
Freelance transcriptionists are proving to be a godsend in times like these and will continue to be after the economy improves.
In fact, you will find that there is…
var s = document.createElement("script");
s.type = "text/javascript";
s.src = "//cdn.chitika.net/getads.js";
try
document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(s);
catch(e)
document.write(s.outerHTML);
());
